Hammersmith Barracks / Estroff Kaserne
Building work for Hammersmith barracks began in 1934 and was completed by 1935. The Infantry Regiment 58 moved into the barracks on 3.10.1935 and named the barracks ‘Estroff Kaserne’ in 1938.
Wentworth Barracks / Stobbe Kaserne
Shortly after, in 1936, the foundations were laid for another barracks, situated between Vlother Strasse and Stadholz / Ulmenstrasse. Again, building of the barracks was completed in two years and in 1937, 2 batallions of the Infantry Regiment 58 moved in. The naming of the barracks ‘Stobbe Kaserne’ took place on 17.7.1938. Both barracks were named after commanders of the Infantry regiment 17, which was stationed in Herford during the First World War.
Various other building work was undertaken during this time: the barracks on Mindener Strasse (Harewood barracks), flats for officers and civilian employees of the Wehrmacht and the Officers’ Casino in front of Wentworth barracks on List Strasse (previously known as Von-Kluck-Strasse).
